Stayin' Alive

Ran across a website called Political Graveyard. Found myself in it. Was happy to see that I was listed as still living.

Pressing the Flesh

Running for office is good for me on an inter-personal level. Normally I'm not an especially outgoing person. Traditionally I've been reluctant to walk up to people and introduce myself.

All that is changing. I can't do this campaign thing without getting out and meeting people.

I saw a business/self-help book in a book store the other day. The title was "never eat lunch alone," or something like that. I'm trying to take that to heart. I used to each lunch alone most every day. Now I try to schedule at least a few lunch meetings each week. I seek out the wisdom and experience of people who have been personally involved in campaigns in the past. Sometimes they get interested in mine. I take all the help I can get.

The calm before the storm

Day after Thanksgiving. I'm out of town visiting family. Taking a little break before the next round of campaign activity heats up.

Once we roll into December, I'll be carrying nomination petitions into every holiday gathering in town. That sounds tacky, but if you're serious about running for office, you take advantage of those situations.

And it's more than signatures. Some of the people I talk with follow up with offers of support. Maybe they'll want a bumper sticker, maybe a yard sign. Maybe they donate cash. Cash buys mailings and radio ads. It all matters. Every vote matters.

None of my opposition in the primary has become visible yet. Three people have apparently thought about running against me. Two of them have taken out papers with the county election office. One of those is the incumbent.

I want to have enough visibility and momentum going into January that they all decide not to waste their time and money.

10 Months Out

This is an election blog of sorts. I'm running for office. The primary election will be held 10 months from now (give or take a few days).

While I've been involved in a few campaigns, I've never run for office before. So more than anything else, this will be a web log of what it's like, what I experience, and what I learn. I thought it would be a good idea to share those thoughts.

So this is the first entry. More to follow.
